A vegan has shared the “monstrosity” of a pizza she received after requesting a plant-based version at Pizza Express.
Mary Nesbitt-Larking, 26, was dining at the Pizza Express in Hatfield, Hertfordshire last month when she decided to order one of the restaurant’s vegan pizzas.
Having previously eaten the vegan pizzas from there before, Nesbitt-Larking, who became vegan more than five years, wasn’t put off when she was informed the restaurant had run out of dairy-free cheese - and instead amended her order to include pine nuts and onions.
However, when the pizza arrived, Nesbitt-Larking was shocked and amused to be served a pizza crust topped with tomato sauce and raw onions - and nothing else.
According to Nesbitt-Larking, the pine nuts, which had cost £1.85, had been forgotten - but the pie still cost her £9.
“Throwback to this monstrosity at Pizza Express in Hatfield,” she wrote on Facebook. “They were out of vegan cheese and forgot my pine nuts.”
The comments on the picture of the pizza have ranged from amusement to horror that Pizza Express served the dish.
“No way. I’ve never seen anything like it. Surely it was a bad joke,” one person wrote.
Another commented: “Do they not have any other f**king vegetables? Like I don’t know, ANYTHING?”
Despite the disappointing meal, which she told the DailyMail tasted like "undercooked flatbread", but which she still ate, Nesbitt-Larking is adamant that it was just a one-time mistake - and she’ll happily visit Pizza Express again for their vegan offerings.
