THE Thresher group has a special offer this weekend at Wine Rack, Bottoms Up and Thresher Wine Shops. All three chains are offering 20 per cent off any 12 bottles of wine or champagne and 10 per cent off any six bottles; in addition, Thresher Wine Shops are offering 5 per cent off any three bottles. From the Thresher treasure trove, Jackson Estate Sauvignon Blanc 1991, pounds 6.95, is a great Sancerre beater, combining the classic pungency of aroma of New Zealand's Marlborough region with real intensity of herbaceous, asparagus-like flavour. The juicy blackcurrant-jam fruitiness of the Cabernet Sauvignon/Cinsault, pounds 2.79, from the go-ahead Russe winery on the Danube, is an ideal, affordable quaffing red. Also good value, Chateau Clement Termes 1990 from Gaillac, pounds 4.59, tastes like good claret with an extra dimension of vibrant, ripe, soft fruitiness. Bargain of the week - because of, rather than despite the price - is Chateau Malescot St Exupery 1986, pounds 9.99, a third Grand Cru Classe from the Medoc . It is a long time since a Bordeaux classified chateau has appeared on any shelf for under pounds 10, so this is a real opportunity to snaffle a forward, succulent, classic claret which will be perfect at Christmas. Chateau Lynch Bages 1986 is pounds 33.95 on the same list and I know which one I'm forking out for.
