September is a wonderfully beguiling month: hot and sunny one day, cooler and misty the next. So which wines to choose?

From Italy…

Masi Campofiorin Rosso Del Veronese 2012

It’s a cooler Autumn day, with perhaps some early season game, a robust pasta dish or just a nice steak. Try this rather special red from the Veneto region, which uses semi-dried grapes to deliver heft to a Valpolicella-style wine, resulting in juicy, soft, cherry fruit flavours, with plenty of spice and complexity to give added interest.

£11.99 Waitrose, £12.99 Majestic

From Australia…

La Bohème Act Three, Pinot Gris and Friends, Yarra Valley 2015

A rather complicated name, deriving from Australia’s legendary soprano, Dame Nellie Melba, the famous Puccini opera in which she performed and the combination of Pinot Gris and two other grapes, which creates an enticingly fresh wine, with light citrus flavours underpinned by just a hint of a savoury finish; like a sunny day giving way to a gentle, smoky, misty evening.

£14.75 Oddbins

From England…

Langham Classic Cuvée Reserve, 2011

An ideal Autumnal celebration wine: think of hay making, late season blackberries and damsons, toasted scones and that elusive aroma of hedgerows on warm evenings, all richly encapsulated in a creamy but enlivening mouthful. Vintage champagne, using the classic grapes, but from Dorset. Not in every high street, but seek it out and you will be hugely rewarded.
