3D game 'Margaritaville' to launch on Facebook

Musician Jimmy Buffet has Cheeseburgers in Paradise restaurants and opened the Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Florida last year, and now the musician will launch an online social game in partnership with THQ, called Margaritaville Online.

Like the 45 million gamers playing Farmville and CityVille, this fall, Buffet fans, known as 'Parrotheads,' will be able to connect by playing his online video game on Facebook, iPhones and iPads.

The Margaritaville Online game, based on Buffett's lyrics and books, will allow users to virtually interact with Buffett's characters, such as Captain Tony and Joe Merchant, embark on adventures, build their own island resorts, and create their own bands.

Developed by Exploding Barrel Games, the tropical environments will be in a fully immersive 3D world and feature a catalog of Buffett's music, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producer Frank Marshall ( The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Indiana Jones and the Bourne films) also worked with Buffett on designing the online game.

While Lady Gaga and Dr. Dre promoted their music through games like CityVille and Mafia Wars, Buffett's game is its own destination.

"The Margaritaville laidback state of mind is inherently social, and THQ has captured the spirit of that lifestyle in this game," said Buffett in a statement. "With Margaritaville Online, fans across the globe can party together any time and any place."

Attendees at the upcoming E3 videogame trade show in Los Angeles, June 7-9, will get the first look at the game and meet the artist.
