Android Market has more free apps, will soon be larger than Apple’s App Store
Thursday 28 April 2011
Apple has dominated the smartphone application front since it first launched its App Store in 2008, boasting thousands more applications than its competitors, but in just a few months that could all change.
If all app stores maintain their current growth pace, Google's Android Market will eclipse the Apple App store in terms of the number of applications available to smartphone users in approximately five months, said application store analyst Distimo in a report published on April 27.
During the same period, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will grow to become the third biggest app store after Google Android Marketplace and Apple App Store.
"The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will also be larger than the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World prior to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace being available for even a full year," notes Distimo.
As the battle for the most app store content rages on, Google is already victorious in at least one facet; the Android Market now has more free applications than any other app store.
According to Distimo, the Google Android Market has 134,342 free applications, over 10,000 more than the Apple App Store for iPhone which has 121,845 free apps.
Google's Android platform is going from strength to strength. Market researcher Nielsen declared Android the smartphone platform of choice for American consumers looking to buy their next smartphone in a study released on April 26 .
