Gear of the year: 2008's top technology

Stuff Live is the nation's biggest ever showcase of hi-tech toys. Simon Osborne-Walker, its curator, picks his must-haves

Hoverit Lounger: Sit on the Hoverit Lounger and you'll feel like you're floating in the air – because you are. The seat of this futuristic piece of furniture has opposing magnets above and below it, causing it to hover. The top section slides up and down on guide poles, to stop the whole thing from coming apart. A work of art both aesthetically and technically.

Our lives are increasingly touched, assisted, even dictated, by technology. It seems impossible that since the first Stuff Live five years ago, the UK's biggest gadget and technology show, we've seen the exponential success of the iPod, witnessed mobile phones become pocket computers, and watched as videogaming has become an internet-connected, interactive family experience. That's why it's so important to keep an eye on the latest and greatest in consumer electronics. This year's Stuff Live at ExCel London from 31 October to 2 November, will be celebrating the amazing toys and tools that make our lives easier and more creative as well as highlighting the new technology trends. Check out this sneak preview of this year's show.
