Still from YouTube's most-watched video in the UK - 'Charlie bit my finger - again!'

It's hard to believe it, but it's internet giant YouTube's eighth birthday today.

The first video was uploaded onto the website on April 23 2005. Looking at the top ten most viewed videos (in the UK) on YouTube, it's hard to find a common trait or pattern other than a love of pop music and a penchant for the bizarre.

Adele features prominently in the most-viewed (from the UK) videos on YouTube of all time - with her songs "Rolling In The Deep" and "Someone Like You". One Direction are also in the most-viewed chart multiple times - with "What Makes You Beautiful", "Kiss You", "Little Things", and "Gotta Be You".

The most popular in the UK

1. Charlie bit my finger - again!

This is the single most-watched video of all time on YouTube, and shows two young brothers sitting on a chair. The youngest bites the finger of the eldest, and the eldest complains that Charlie has bitten his finger... Again.

2. Adele - Rolling In The Deep

Adele's 2010 song about a scorned lover made it to number 2 in the charts and spent ten weeks in the top ten. The video is almost as epic as the song, showing Adele in an empty house as someone smashes crockery.

3. One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful

This first single from the British X Factor boyband went straight to number one in 2011. The video shows them splashing in the surf and singing on the beach - it's not hard to see why their legions of fans would want to watch it over and over.

4. Thigh massage video

A strange entry at number four, but who ever said that the most popular things on the internet had to make sense? The video explains how one should massage thighs - it's very specific, but with over 200 million views, we can only hope that there's now a whole army of people armed with the knowledge to massage thighs effectively.

5. Adele - Someone Like You

Adele proves popular with the YouTube-viewing public. This is her second single from her album 21 which was released in 2011. It was written about The video shows Adele walking alone in Paris, the city of romance. How symbolic.

Most popular worldwide

Psy's "Gangnam Style" tops the worldwide chart with a whopping 1.5 billion views. Second comes Justin Bieber with his debut single "Baby", then Jennifer Lopez's "On The Floor". In fourth place is "Love The Way You Lie" with Eminem and Rihanna. And lastly, LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem is the fifth most-watched video on youtube, worldwide, with 500 million views.

Honourable mentions

The 'sneezing baby panda' video is a timeless YouTube classic and is the 11th most watched video on the site. It's been combined with the 'I am Sparta' video from 300 and other internet memes and still remains a favourite. Paul Potts' shocking and moving operatic debut on the X Factor comes in at 20. Finally, the 'News Anchor Fail Competition', the 23rd most-watched video, shows various news anchor failings - from someone walking into a post, to unfortunate tongue-ties and accidental offensive language.
