Indie hit 'Minecraft' reaches 2.5m sales
Tuesday 14 June 2011
Minecraft has passed 2.5 million sales, according to its creator Markus Persson, as the cooperative construction game looks to launch on iOS, Android and Xbox 360.
Of those 2.5m purchases, 800k were made at €10, during the game's alpha testing period prior to December 2010.
The remainder were priced at €15, starting on December 20 when Minecraft entered its beta testing phase.
Players pay for an enhanced and regularly updated version of the free Minecraft, and in order to fund further development.
At one point, Persson's PayPal account was frozen due to suspicious activity, in reality a result of the incredible volume of payments coming in response to Minecraft's word-of-mouth buzz.
Minecraft's rise to fame has inspired a host of similar projects thanks to its simple genius, from FortressCraft on the 360's Xbox Live Indie Games to Cubelands and Magic Digger on PC, and the Eden World Builder and Minecraft World Explorer apps on iOS.
