iPhone 6 Plus sold out in the US, but can Apple keep up its record breaking sales streak?

The iPhone 5s and 5c sold more than nine million units in their opening weekend last year - can the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus beat this?

Apple’s long-awaited release of a phablet sized iPhone seems to have been a hit with customers, with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus model already sold out in the US.

Although Apple has not yet released figures for its opening weekend sales (typically a bellwether for the new device’s performance) the company is being typically bullish on its prospects.

“Response to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus has been incredible, with a record number of pre-orders overnight,” an Apple spokesperson told The Independent following the phone’s pre-order release on Friday.

In the UK the wait time for pre-ordering iPhone 6 Plus is also longer (3-4 weeks as opposed to 7-10 business days for the iPhone 6) but as with the US this could well be a reflection of lower supply as much as higher demand.

Regardless, tech analysts around the world will be waiting eagerly to see how Apple’s new iPhones performed in their opening weekend, and whether or not the company has managed to maintain its recording breaking sales figures.

Last year the company sold more than nine million iPhone 5s and 5c smartphones, beating 2012’s sales of five million iPhone 5 units and the previous year’s sales of more than four million iPhone 4S devices.
