Videos on YouTube were viewed an astounding 700 billion times by people all over the globe in 2010.

To put that figure in perspective, people using microblogging site Twitter sent around 25 billion tweets during the same period.

The more than 13 million hours of videos uploaded to YouTube in 2010 documented many of the major events taking place around the globe, highlighted (and created) trends in popular culture, and collectively provided a video snapshot of the world in 2010.

"These lists of most-watched videos reflect the people, places and events that captured our collective attention and imagination throughout the year" said Google on its YouTube blog.

The list of top videos for 2010 were brimming with music, parodies, and internet memes.

A news interview with former housing project resident Antoine Dodson turned into a viral sensation after it was remixed by the Gregory Brothers and used in their Auto-tune the News series, and a parody of American singer and party girl Ke$ha grabbed the attention of the online video-watching population too.

Additional videos that had mouses firmly fixed on the replay button included a musical performance by 13-year-old Greyson Chance (often called "the next Justin Bieber"), a series of videos featuring an animated and annoying citrus fruit, Old Spice's "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" internet campaign, a video of a man's emotive response on seeing a double rainbow in the Yosemite National Park and OK Go's "This Too Shall Pass - Rube Goldberg Machine version" video clip.

Globally, as of November 2010, the most-watched YouTube videos (excluding major label music videos) were:
