'Motorstorm Apocalypse' trailer previews Wreckreation mode
Wednesday 02 March 2011
Senior staff from the
Motorstorm Apocalypse team have issued a second developer diary ahead of the racing game's March 16 release, lifting the lid on its multiplayer-focused Wreckreation mode.
"You can jump in there and play races that you set up yourself, you can play with your friends, you can also jump online and play against fifteen other competitors," explains senior designer Paul Rustchynsky.
"We wanted to make sure that it's fun for every player no matter what their skill level is."
Players are rewarded not only for their speed and skill, but also on correctly predicting the outcome of a race.
Along with the usual PlayStation Network Trophies, the PS3 game also provokes players with in-game challenges, medals, and accolades to be won.
As players rank up, they unlock vehicles, customization options, and perks that boost racing abilities.
Game mechanics such as these are core concepts for big budget first person shooters: Call of Duty: Black Ops pushed character customization and wager matches, while Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players earn a multitude of insignias and pins according to their cumulative accomplishments.
MotorStorm Apocalypse, an arcade racer set in a catastrophe-hit coastal city, is due for release on March 16 in European regions, and on April 12 in North America.
The unusual gap in transatlantic dates enables Apocalypse to avoid conflict with another March release, the Sony-backed baseball game MLB 11: The Show that has MLB 2K11 to contend with.
There's also the NASCAR video game due in North America on March 29, and the not insignificant matter of hi-octane racing sim Shift 2: Unleashed, which is out at the same time.
