The Independent has upgraded its free iPhone app to better enable users to read the latest news and opinion from the Independent while on the move.
Available from the iPhone app store here , the application offers readers the chance to read articles from The Independent both on and off-line. Once launched the App automatically downloads all the articles and images for offline reading, talking around a minute on a Wi-Fi connection and a few minutes on a standard mobile connection, making it possible to read the latest Independent news even when without mobile reception. Articles can be read while the download continues.
The new app delivers 12 categories of articles, including World and UK news, Sport, Business, Football, Opinion, People, Politics, Technology, Arts and Entertainment and Environment.
The first version, while extremely successful, gave rise to a number of user comments which have now been addressed:
There’s a new ‘mark all as read button’ so that users can mark all the stories in a caregory as read. The familiar ‘unread’ marker on stories won’t then appear until the next refresh of content.
- or you can go to settings and turn the unread button off
- you can hide app icon badges
- You can set the app so that all unread stories expire after one day
The new app delivers 12 categories of articles, including World and UK news, Sport, Business, Football, Opinion, People, Politics, Technology, Arts and Entertainment and Environment.
Jimmy Leach, editorial director for digital said, “The changes are in response to user requests where many were slightly irritated by the slightly nagging quality of the unread stories’ Missing Ink Studios have been working very hard to refine an already excellent app, and Apple’s approval of the update means an even more seamless service for our iPhone users.”
