Samsung confirms Galaxy Gear smartwatch for 4 September
Event will also see the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note III
Samsung have confirmed they will be launching a smartwatch named the Galaxy Gear in Berlin on 4 September. The date has been rumoured for some time, but was confirmed in an interview between Smasung’s executive vice president Lee Young-hee and the Korea Times.
“We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4,” said Lee, stating that the Gear would be marketed mostly to “young trend setters”.
“The Gear won’t have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry.”
Lee also confirmed that the event would also include the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 3, the latest in Samsung’s range of 5.6-inch ‘superphones’. The latest Note is rumoured to come with 3GB of RAM, a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a camera capable of capturing video at 4K resolution.
Lee’s comments about the Galaxy Gear have raised new speculation about where the new generation of smartwatches will be positioned in the market. Describing the Gear as a ‘concept device’ might suggest that the device will not be sold to the general public, or simply that Samsung do not expect to capture a large market share with the new wearable.
Many analysts speculate that the Gear will be a companion device rather than a replacement for mobiles. This would mean pairing the watch with a handset via Bluetooth, a set-up that would certainly complement Samsung’s success with large-screen phones. The latter could stay in the users’ bag and provide the cellular brains, whilst the watch would offer easy access to incoming calls and texts.
