Social media sites and tools are becoming an increasingly popular component of internet enabled TVs. Electronics manufacturer Panasonic announced on August 17 the addition of social networking tool twitter on the company's Viera Cast High Definition TVs (HDTV).

Twitter is the latest in a list of social networking tools including Skype, YouTube and Google's Picasa Web Album to be added to Panasonics Viera Cast enabled series of HDTV. In a press statement Panasonic state that addition of twitter to the Viera Cast provides another social networking tool which "owners can now use to communicate with family and friends worldwide"

Viera Cast enabled HDTVs, Viera cast enables users to browse the internet through their HDTVs, USB terminals on the Viera Cast HDTV allow for the addition of a keyboard essentially turning the HDTV into a PC.

Available in Europe and the United States Viera Cast enabled HDTV such as the 58" TH-58PZ85OU retail for around 3000€ ($4000).

Electronics manufacturer LG have also signed a deal with internet call providing service Skype, the service is available on their range of LED Infina TVs. A LG 55" Full HD 1080p LED HDTV with internet access to sites like YouTube retails for slightly under 3000€ ($4,000).

The Samsung LED 7000 and 8000 series of internet enabled HDTVs also provide access to Skype and YouTube, the Samsung 55" UN55C71000 3D LED HDTV retails for around 2000€ ($2,800).

A spokesperson from Panasonic was not available to comment.
