Pokémon World Championships announces 2011 qualifiers
Thursday 21 April 2011
National eliminators across five European countries and six US states will be in effect from May, with winners going forward to the
Pokémon Black &
White World Championships in San Diego, California, August 12-14.
The European heats are in Birmingham, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Cologne, while the US Championship Series calls in on Seattle, San Jose, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC and Newark.
Entrants will need to bring their own Nintendo DS and a copy of Pokémon White or Pokémon Black, limiting their chosen team of Pokémon to those drawn from the Unova Pokédex.
Spaces are limited with registrations allocated on the day and players split across three age ranges: Juniors (born 2000 or after), Seniors (born 1996-1999), and Masters (born 1995 or before).
European tournaments have room for 256 entrants in the Junior and Senior Divisions and 512 in the Masters Division, while the US Championship Series doubles capacity in each grouping.
The top two finalists receive invitations and travel allowances for the World Championships in San Diego.
The top sixteen from each US tournament will then meet again at Indianapolis's US National Championships, June 8-10, for a shot at becoming one of eight sent on to the Worlds.
Two from March's Korean Championships are already assured places, along with grand finalists from the 2010 Pokémon Worlds.
There's one more qualifier: a last chance saloon on August 12 at the Worlds themselves, for Pokémon trainers who need just one more shot at becoming the best of the best.
