Students teach us how technology can solve the world’s most difficult problems

College and high school students from around the globe have put their thinking caps on for the 2010 edition of Microsoft's Imagine Cup, eager to teach the adults around them how to solve the world's most problematic issues using technology.

The Imagine Cup is the world's number-one student technology competition. The event attracts around 325,000 students each year from every part of the globe in the pursuit of innovative technology and fresh new ideas.

The theme of this year's event is "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems," and students have been busy working on imaginative inventions that might one day change the world we live in.

"When I was a student tinkering with the first personal computers, I thought I had a pretty good idea of how PCs could be used. But in the 35 years since, I've never ceased to be amazed at the power of computing to make a difference in so many parts of our lives" wrote Bill Gates on his blog, www.thegatesnotes.com/.

"I'm especially enthusiastic about the challenge of this year's competition, which is to imagine how technology can help meet the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals and solve some of the world's toughest problems-including eliminating poverty, halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria, and providing universal primary education."

The Imagine Cup challenge spans a one-year period and consists of local, regional and online contests.
Around 400 students have made it through to the last stage of the competition and have been invited to attend the Worldwide Finals, which will be held in Warsaw, Poland from July 3-8.
