Terrifying tornado footage grips YouTube: viral video spotlight
Tuesday 24 May 2011
A truly terrifying video of the tornado that struck Joplin on the 22 of May has gone viral on YouTube attracting over a million views in 48 hours.
The video titled ‘ First Person video of Joplin MO tornado 5/22/11' is described by the YouTube user whom uploaded the video as being filmed at ‘ Fastrip [convenience store] on east 20th street' according to the poster the group on the video ‘ huddled in the back of the store until the glass got sucked out, then ran into the walk in storage fridge'.
Though the video is largely lacking in visuals, the voices of the people caught in the tornado convey how terrifying an experience it must have been.
Members of the unidentified group can be heard praying and expressing their love for each other, at one point a child can be heard crying and repeating ‘ I don't want to die', all the while in the background the noise of breaking glass and other destruction can be heard.
The town of Joplin in Missouri, USA, was hit by the single deadliest tornado in over sixty years on Sunday May 22.
The tornado destroyed thousands of homes and reports from the AP state that the death toll stood at 116 on Monday but is expected to climb.
The tornado was part of a series of tornados to have struck Southern America over the last few days and forecasters suggest that more storms could be on the way.
