Top US web properties: summer getaways, kid-friendly activities entice web users

As warmer weather arrived in the US and vacation planning began, Americans hit the web for advice on top summer destinations and fun ways to entertain the kids.

"Summer getaways were clearly top-of-mind for many Americans in June, sending millions of people to hotel, cruise, car rental and travel agent sites," said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix. "And with school letting out for the summer, parents turned to the web to shop for ways to keep their kids active with sporting goods and other fun activities."

A total of 116 million people in the US visited websites in the Travel category in June, an all-time high for the category, said comScore in its latest Media Metrics web properties ranking.

Visitors to websites in the Travel - Ground/Cruise category were up by 14 percent during the month of June, to almost 13.5 million visitors. Hotel and Resort sites saw a boost too, with 34.8 million visitors for the month.

Parents searched the web looking for sporting goods and toys to keep their kids entertained during the summer months.

Websites in the Retail - Sports/Outdoors category were visited by 32 million Americans in June, pushing the category into second place in comScore's top-growing categories for the month. Toy sites were popular too, with 15.7 million visitors in June.

Google continued to top comScore's overall ranking for the month with 182.5 million visitors. Yahoo! Sites retained second place and Microsoft Sites followed in third. Amazon Sites moved up the rung one place to sixth and Twitter jumped nine positions to 37th place with 30.6 million visitors.

  4. Facebook.com - 160.9 million
  5. AOL, Inc. - 110.4 million
  6. Amazon Sites - 95.8 million
  7. Turner Digital - 93.4 million
  8. Glam Media - 86.0 million
  9. Ask Network - 84.8 million
  10. Viacom Digital - 81.6 million
