Sesame Street has rejected a petition lodged by thousands of fans to see puppets Bert and Ernie tie the knot in an wedding ceremony in New York State.
The Sesame Workshop posted a statement on Facebook revealing that “Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”
Disappointed Twitter users are flooding the microblogs with posts about the puppets tweeting, “The folks who fret that a wedding between Bert and Ernie would 'sexualize' a kids' show were remarkably silent about a frog porking a pig,” “The wedding of the year is off!” and “All this talk about making Bert and Ernie get married, how bout we try to find Oscar a f^&*ing HOUSE!!!!!”
The Spanish names for Bert and Ernie, “Epi y Blas,” are also trending on Twitter.
Microbloggers are reacting to the news of Jani Lane’s death. The former frontman of metal band Warrant was found dead in a hotel aged 47.
The death of “Richard Mannington Bowes,” a man who was attacked during the riots in London, is also prompting responses on the social network.
The top hashtags on Twitter on the morning of August 12 are “#shestooyoungforyoubro,” “#ReplaceMovieTitlesWithHoe” and “#FamousLies.”
“Heello,” the name of a Twitter-like social network created by the people behind Twitpic is in sixth place, and “BUTT SCRATCHER” is in ninth place in Twitter’s most talked about topics.
