Two 'Monster Hunter' games announced for 3DS
Tuesday 13 September 2011
Presenting at the Nintendo 3DS Conference on September 13, company boss Satoru Iwata unveiled
Monster Hunter 3G and
Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS alongside it.
The Monster Hunter series has become a multiplayer beast-slaying epic, and was a driving force behind the Sony PSP's success in Japan.
So it's a coup for Nintendo to secure Monster Hunter 3G - a conversion of the Wii's Monster Hunter Tri - and an all-new Monster Hunter 4 for its own handheld system.
That's in addition to the recently announced Dragon Quest X Online for Wii and Wii U, another iconic series set to stay with Nintendo for the time being at least.
This doesn't rule out a Monster Hunter for the PlayStation Vita, Sony's new portable whose Japanese release date should be announced at the Tokyo Game Show on September 14.
It does put the pressure on Sony to come up with a reason for punters to pick the Vita, a reason that's as good as or better than the 3DS Monster Hunter 3G which hits Japanese retail come December 10.
One sticking point for Nintendo may turn out to be the Slide Pad accessory. It's an inexpensive cradle which adds a second thumb pad to the 3DS and offers better control of supported games like Monster Hunter 3G.
Those on the fence may hesitate to pick the 3DS over the Vita if they think that a Monster Hunter Vita will eventually appear and that a second slide pad will be included in a redesigned 3DS.
