'War of the Worlds' coming to 360 and PS3
Wednesday 31 August 2011
The War of the Worlds is well known as a novel, radio play, and for its 1953 and 2005 film adaptations; now it's coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October.
"We take you from a guy on a train to the middle of hell on earth," says Creative Director Lee Cummings in the game's first developer diary video.
Arriving in download form on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, War of the Worlds' design team cites the highly regarded Flashback, Out of This World and Prince of Persia Classic as influences.
"One of the best things about those games is that you would learn from your mistakes," explains industry veteran Mike Mika. "You die often. If you get shot, you're dead - there's no health bar or standardized power-up system."
There's also a hint of Limbo and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet about it, and it's no surprise to learn that Other Ocean Entertainment has also worked on the XBL and PSN conversion of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Scriptwriting comes from Chris Fowler, best known for the Bryant & May crime fiction series, with Chris Hülsbeck providing the score - Hülsbeck worked on the venerated Turrican and Star Wars: Rogue Squadron series and has since moved on to iPhone games like Zombie Smash.
To underline The War of the World's sci-fi credentials, Patrick Stewart of Star Trek and X-Men fame is on board as narrator.
