Kramnik tried a new move, 13...Ng5, in Petroff's Defence, but after 21.Bc4 had problems. 21...Qd6 loses to 22.Bxf7+! Kxf7 23.Rc7+! Shirov won in a delicate endgame.

Kramnik soon had Shirov in trouble after improving on the first game with 18.Bh4. After 23...Bxc1 24.Nh6+ Kh8 25.Rxc1 Black would have been in great difficulty. Shirov did well to salvage a draw.
