DOCTORS who doubt the wisdom of coronary bypass operations on patients who smoke should note the findings of a new study from Boston. It found that half the smokers operated on gave up after their operations - and were still non-smokers five years later. Bypass surgery is a highly effective way to persuade smokers to quit, according to the study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
