Mobile phones 'more dangerous than smoking'

Brain expert warns of huge rise in tumours and calls on industry to take immediate steps to reduce radiation

By Geoffrey Lean

Mobile phones could kill far more people than smoking or asbestos, a study by an award-winning cancer expert has concluded. He says people should avoid using them wherever possible and that governments and the mobile phone industry must take "immediate steps" to reduce exposure to their radiation.

The study, by Dr Vini Khurana, is the most devastating indictment yet published of the health risks.

It draws on growing evidence – exclusively reported in the IoS in October – that using handsets for 10 years or more can double the risk of brain cancer. Cancers take at least a decade to develop, invalidating official safety assurances based on earlier studies which included few, if any, people who had used the phones for that long.

Earlier this year, the French government warned against the use of mobile phones, especially by children. Germany also advises its people to minimise handset use, and the European Environment Agency has called for exposures to be reduced.

Professor Khurana – a top neurosurgeon who has received 14 awards over the past 16 years, has published more than three dozen scientific papers – reviewed more than 100 studies on the effects of mobile phones. He has put the results on a brain surgery website, and a paper based on the research is currently being peer-reviewed for publication in a scientific journal.

He admits that mobiles can save lives in emergencies, but concludes that "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours". He believes this will be "definitively proven" in the next decade.

Noting that malignant brain tumours represent "a life-ending diagnosis", he adds: "We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation." He fears that "unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps", the incidence of malignant brain tumours and associated death rate will be observed to rise globally within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to intervene medically.

"It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking," says Professor Khurana, who told the IoS his assessment is partly based on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide, three times as many as smoke. Smoking kills some five million worldwide each year, and exposure to asbestos is responsible for as many deaths in Britain as road accidents.

Late last week, the Mobile Operators Association dismissed Khurana's study as "a selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual". It believes he "does not present a balanced analysis" of the published science, and "reaches opposite conclusions to the WHO and more than 30 other independent expert scientific reviews".

I wouldn't be so sure. There are so many leadership experts out there who would disagree with you. The evidence is mounting, and although it will be bad for all businesses, and a backwards step for technology - the nanny nation mentality may indeed step in and decide that mobile phones are too much of a risk as they are, and will give phone companies an ultimatum "Make them safe, or don't sell them"
I believe this

This is scary stuff, brain cancer is on the increase this is true, and when 59 year old healthy women are dying of brain tumours you have to ask yourself why.
Time to try and give up the habit.

It does worry me, but mobile phone usage really is part of day to day life now. And I can't see that changing regardless of the health implications.

Do Wi-Fi enabled routers and wireless phones emit a similiar sort of Wave?

.....that studies are a waste of time..... Well OK that is not necessarily true but one does start to have doubts when we get conflicting reports on a weekly basis. I expect we will know more in 50 years when mobile phones have been pressed to peoples ears from ages 14-64. Then of course we will have the users that have used mobile phones part time franchise or no franchise. Living in the countryside with no mobile reception perhaps I will be one of the few that survives the mobile phone induced collapse of the human population.

These studies aren't always a waste of time my friend, but I agree with your point, as I show in my comment below. business leadership is a very tough game and to be honest with the recession on at the moment, businesses need all the help they can get. An extra ounce of ledgislation and more red tape on the back of weak studies will only destroy more jobs. One has to balance the benefit of bringing the law, which the jobs that will be lost should it take effect
I wonder how easy this will be to fix

Is there really anything the <a href="http://www.business-leadership.co.uk>business leadership</a> experts in these industries can actually do about this problem? It seems to me like it may be a bit of a 'wish list' simply putting it to industry experts that this 'needs to be solved'. This is the real world.
Mobile Phones More Dangerous Than Smoking

Based on my own experiance of using mobiles since late 90's I have to say that I fully agree with the concerns raised, I use the phone for upto 6 hours a day - almost every day and have started to have health problems. I don't know if most people use the same ear(!) but I have noticed some changes to my health and after particularly long calls find the problems magnified, to dismiss this issue is very foolish. I know there have been industry studies but whether the medical community were involved is something I'm not clear about. It's time to open a fresh open enquiry into the issue, involve real heavy phone users, GPs, Dentists, Ear Specialists, Brain Surgeons to compare findings. I think you may be suprised at the result.
I too, have experienced significant side effects due to cell phone use

And because of this, I no longer use a mobile phone for talking, only texting. I have become almost marginalized from society because of my refusal to use a cell phone as a conversational/speech device. I have had to deal with moderate disapproval and confusion from family and friends alike. It's almost as if you do not conform, you are blacklisted.

Regardless, I will absolutely, under no circumstances put a cell phone to my ear and I am extremely weary of even using an ear piece. I get very paranoid when someone sits next to me on a bus or train and they are talking on a cell phone. And every so often, someone will hold a phone to my head, delighted that the person on the other end wants to say "hi." Tell them to take a rain check.

I don't know whether or not my experiences are an individual case, but I've been on websites and forums where people have voiced eerily similar experiences. This leads me to believe that there are indeed adverse risks to cell phone use that have (for obvious reasons) not made it to mainstream awareness.

I don't intend to scare anyone with this post, and I am sure the majority of people have experienced no ill side effects. I am only voicing my own personal experience.
Too long in the discovery!

Absolutely. I'm surprised it took this long for people to find out. Years ago in the late 90's, I remember todays giants drove a reputably healthy mobilie phone producing company based in Western Europe, Magcom, out of business (I have no link to these).

Ever since then I am yet to find a good phone. Everything since has been getting cheaper in price and quality (making them more dangerous than ever).

Protect yourselves and avoid the budget priced, mainstream handsets - unless you prefer a slower, more drawn out suicide.

L.S.

It is crue that radio waves, especially short waves, are dangerous to human health. If one compares this to te microwaves, which have been proven dangerous to human health also on the same scientific basis, than one cannot concluded: that radio waves in technology, especially short waves, improve life and / or lifestyle.
It is up to not only the manufacturers but also up to global public health organisations.

Looks like, the old ways of living, are more healthy than the "modern way(v)s"..

It makes perfect sense to anybody who wants to do a little bit of research. It was explained to me by an expert in the field like this: The microwave in mobile phones can travel to Australia (from New Zealand) and back again in a very short time. Do you really want to be putting that sort of radiation next to your brain? I was also told me that a safe distance to be, when someone is talking on a cellphone, is a 3 metre radius. If you a not a regular user of mobile phones, you are still a passive receiver of microwave radiation. Isn't this problem sounding very familiar? Here is a good website to help with getting you informed. www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/Issues/2005/April/Mobilephonemicrowaves.asp

There is TONS of evidence out there AND new, patented technology to help protect ourselves (not many know about this yet). Check out this webite www.bioprotechnology.com. Great information and I would suggest reading the book, "Would You Stick You Head in a Microwave Oven" by Dr. Goldberg. Not only brain cancers (gliomas) but how about autism, behavior disorders, Parkinson's, auditory nerve tumors....the list goes on and on! We have to ask WHY?

In my opinion, mobiles produce radiation sending signals from A to B, but so does a sky+ box, the home sattelite that gives you tv, so does the router that connects you to this internet page, even the granite in cornwall creates radiation. The only difference is, mobiles are held near the brain. Radiation is produced from all sorts of natural things, people and animals alike evolve to put up with these things. Although there may be a slight risk of cancers developing, it is incredibly small.

It would be very naive to expect the Mobile Operators Association to accept his findings. Mobile phones industry cost billions; they don?t want to lose them. It is actually frightening how many people are dying every year and those numbers continue to grow. It is not unreasonable to ask what causes it. It is not the first time mobile phone risk study was conducted, and each time there is a conclusion that they present the risk, it follows by another study which states that research was not properly conducted and they are safe to use. It very much reminds me the situation with microwaves. On group of scientists claim they are dangerous, the other they are not. In any case it is better to be safe, than sorry. About 6 years ago, I used cellphone 4, 5 hours a day.
One day, I noticed my left side of ear started to feel numb while I was on the phone. The area of numbness extended gradually. Very soon, my entire face numb. I went to see doctors. I was given tests. All reports came out normal, but the numbness was there. So doctor said not to use cell phone for a while.
After a couple month, the numbness went away. Now I am not able to use cell phone more than 15 minutes or I will fell the inside of my entire skull numb.
People still think I am funny and not taking seriously.

The danger however can be avoided by simply turning your phone on to flight mode, that is if you have one of the newer mobile phones. I personally always leave my phone of in my pocket when I can.
