Tapioca chips, the next gluten-free snack trend
Wednesday 07 July 2010
Gluten free products are becoming more in demand and similar to bubble tea made from tapioca pearls, cassava (also referred to as tapioca or yucca) chips may be the latest gluten free snack trend to gain international appeal.
The 2010 Summer Fancy Food Show ended on June 29 and some of the 180,000 new products introduced at the show are beginning to hit shelves and sites.
On July 5, the trend spotter site Coolhunting.com explained cassava "...has more fiber and potassium than its spud counterpart, making a healthier and increasingly popular alternative in several foods."
Cassava is a mainstay in numerous sub-Sharan African and South American diets. Cassava chips, similar to plantain chips, have been popular in Cuba for years. Here are three new brands to look out for:
Joseph Banks Cassava Chips are available in four dairy-free flavors: original sea salt, wasabi, roasted tomato, cracked pepper and chili & kaffir lime (113g bag costs $4.37/€3.48). http://brclassics.com/index.php?manuf=7 (includes video)
PAPA Cassava Chips are MSG-free, halal, described as ‘200% taste' and a healthier snack by Australia's Health Promotion Board. Available in a variety of flavors: original, hot & spicy, smokey BBQ, black pepper, cheese and pizza and sold in 50 g and 120g bags. http://www.papafoods.com/papacassava_site/index.html
Yogi Chips created by a Hawaiian yogi Wai Lana, have the most extensive flavor offering with original, lime chili, sweet & sour, sea salt & vinegar, swiss cheese, pizza, herb & garlic, French onion, Thai curry with lime and barbeque. Yogi Chips also include cassava in their whole grain line. A 25g bag costs $1.59/€1.27 or a 68g bag costs $3.19/€2.54. http://www.wailana.com/yogastore/subcategory.php?sid=110
Also Terra Chips' Exotic Vegetables ( http://www.terrachips.com/products/terra-chips.php) have been on the market for years and include yucca as well as Chifles' Cassava Chips (http://www.chifleschips.com) and Arico Cassava Chips ( http://www.aricofoods.com/cassava-chips).
Most of the chips are free of GMOs, wheat, gluten, soy, cholesterol, trans-fats, artificial flavors and preservatives. So enjoy tasting them all to find out how you prefer your cassava or tapioca flavored and you might even want to wash them down with a bubble tea.
