Thousands of yogis will unroll their mats in New York’s Times Square on June 21 as part of the annual Mind Over Madness Yoga event. Even if you can't attend, you can practice your vinyasas via a live stream.

Held on the summer solstice, the world is invited to Times Square, similar to watching the New Year's ball drop, except you need to bring your yoga mat to take part in the free yoga festival. The goal is to find "tranquility and transcendence in the midst of the urban energy of the world's most commercial and frenetic place" with one of the day's scheduled free yoga classes: 7:30 a.m. - 8:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Event sponsor Lucy Activewear is providing free yoga mats and gift bags to the first 1,000 attendees for each class. New York teachers include Nicole Nichols from Yoga Studies Institute, Patrick Lynch from Bikram Yoga NYC, and Douglass Stewart from Yoga Works and ISHTA Yoga Center.

Since it is Times Square, where anything and everything is known to happen, there is a waiver you need to sign as well as RSVP for a class. New this year, organizers Times Square Alliance will stream the event live on their website.

Outdoor yoga is ramping up this summer, although on a much smaller scale that Mind Over Madness. In London, you can join yoga clothing company Zobhr's community yoga class in Hyde Park on July 10. Next year, Zobha is organizing a large event on June 24, 2012, in honor of the Olympic Games, where they aim to draw thousands of yogis to Hyde Park. Chicago yogis can join free classes near North Beach Avenue on June 19 as part of Old Navy's Get Active yoga Tour. The event travels to Atlanta on June 25 and Boston on July 17.
