A Day That Shook The World: Challenger Space Shuttle explodes
Friday 28 January 2011
On 28 January 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger broke into pieces 73 seconds into the flight killing its seven crew members.
Onlookers at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida were horrified as the launch celebrations turned to tragedy and spacecraft was engulfed in smoke and flames.
Crew members Dick Scobee, Michael J Smith, Ronald MacNair, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, Judith Resnik and Christa McAuliffe, the first member of the Teacher in Space project, were killed instantly.
The explosion was caused by the failure of an O-ring seal in the vehicle’s solid rocket booster.
