A Day That Shook The World: London awarded 2012 Olympics
On 6 July 2005, the 2012 Olympics were awarded to London.
London was a surprise winner - Paris was the favourite throughout the process of bidding for the 2012 Games - and as the announcement was made, surprise was etched in the faces of both the victors and the losers.
London's winning bid was made on legacy, and inspiring a younger generation of athletes. It promised a world-class Olympics, with no expense spared - a promise that looks set to come true.
