2010 interior design trends for the home

Whether social consciousness finds material form in an aesthetic, or simply follows current material constraints, interior design commentators are unanimous that the global financial crisis will inform how we decorate our homes in 2010.

As 2009 wraps up, and designers and industry professionals reflect upon the year in design gone by, predictions for 2010 trends begin to roll in with the economic crisis providing surprising inspiration for the year to come.

"Staying in is the new going out" is becoming the catch-cry behind many web-based interior design predictions for 2010. With many retreating from the hostility of the economic crisis, says LaLuminata.co.uk, a UK-based online design magazine, "we will see the return of style with comfort, think Chesterfield wingback chairs, cosy textiles, shag-pile carpets; all creating a serene and comforting living environment."

IMM Cologne's annual trend book was released recently, also citing comfort as a guiding factor in trends to come. They extend upon the theme though, adding "'Trickery', 'Rehab' and 'Discipline' to the most important developments for the interior design sector 2010."

Color therapy specialist forum Coloursofthesoul.com peg green, blue and orange as key colors of the palette, advising that the tones be kept soft. Pantone.com recently released their 2010 color of the year as PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise, asserting that the color "inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world."

The trend in green design and energy saving witnessed in the last couple years will likely continue through 2010, but LaLuminata.co.uk ventures that green design will go luxe. "No longer is the time where sustainability is seen as an un-stylish alternative."
