In thing: Scholl sandals

After clogs, comes daughter of clogs: the Scholl exercise sandal. We knew it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Last spotted on sexy Seventies mums, the Dr Scholl single-strap sandals died an ignoble death, shunned by a generation of daughters who saw them as too ugly and, like the flip-flop (also making a comeback this summer), too passe for words. Now they are popping up on the pages of women's magazines and, if this heat-wave continues, are poised on the brink of summer revival. Best worn with brown legs, these toe-grippers are value for money at pounds 23.99, and cut a much finer figure for exercise practicality than the lumpen, brown and toadish Birkenstocks and other fakes.

Dr Scholl sandals at the Scholl Foot and Leg Care Centre, 58 Brompton Rd SW3 (071-589 1887) Mon-Sat 9am-6pm/Weds 9am-8pm.
