CONGRATULATIONS to the world's top legal brains on seeking to pool their talents to safeguard human rights (News, 19 July). However, should seniority per se be the only criteria for participation in the proposed summit? In many developing countries, seniority of state-appointed judges is associated with tacit acceptance of state policies, however inimical this might be to human rights. In many countries, there are judges and lawyers who have campaigned to safeguard human rights; their contribution should be sought for this noble undertaking.
