Letter: Don't pander to this Welsh elite
Roger Dobson writes about the "Crachach" in his article"Why Ffion is marrying badly" (14 December). This group rose to prominence under the Conservatives and allowed them to pretend that devolution was unnecessary. Creating a colonial elite from among "loyal" chiefs is a tactic as old as colonialism. The Crachach was happy to play along because of the very tangible rewards on offer in the form of quangos and other posts.
But now, as Wales enters a more democratic era, it seems unlikely that a minority within a minority can retain the exalted status it enjoyed when used by a party with little support in Wales and even less from within the indigenous population.Labour, the majority party in Wales, has no need to pander to the Crachach.
