Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Screen goddess Elizabeth Taylor married eight times, but her co-star Richard Burton was the only man she wed twice. Both were married when they met in 1963, while filming Cleopatra; such was their attraction, they quickly divorced their partners, and wed for the first time in 1964. Their marriage was considered one of Hollywood's most volatile, and was often compared to that of the nightmarish couple they portrayed in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Burton was a heavy drinker, and the pair's hard-living lifestyle frequently caused rows. He said of Taylor: "What Liz wants, she gets... I found her irresistible." Their first marriage lasted for 10 years, their second not even a year, yet Taylor firmly believed that they would wed again, and that it would be "third time lucky". The two remained friends until Burton's death; he would reportedly speak to Taylor for hours on the phone, even when married to his last wife. Taylor was inconsolable on learning of Burton's brain haemorrhage in 1984, and all the more so after his wife banned her from his funeral. It is said that she still sleeps with a picture of Burton by her bed.
