Miss Jamaica wins the 2019 Miss World crown

Miss Nigeria’s reaction to her friend, Miss Jamaica, winning the Miss World crown has gone viral as an example of how friends should support each other.

On Saturday, the beauty pageant’s final saw three contestants remain on stage as they waited to find out who would be crowned Miss World 2019, including Miss Nigeria, Nyekachi Douglas, Miss Jamaica, Toni-Ann Singh, and Miss Brazil, Elis Coelho.

When Singh was announced as the winner, the 23-year-old stood in shock while her competitor, Douglas, launched into an excited dance for her friend, stomping her feet and shouting her congratulations before embracing the two other finalists with a group hug.

Social media users were quick to comment on Douglas’ reaction, with many praising the behaviour as a display of true friendship.

“In 2020 when your friend starts a new business, podcast, therapy, anything that enhances their life. Be her, Miss Nigeria,” wrote one Twitter user.

Another added: “Absolutely amazing in all my years of watching never seen another queen this excited about someone else's win. #MissNigeria you are simply the best.”

While a third person wrote: “Miss Nigeria’s reaction to Miss Jamaica winning #MissWorld2019 is the only energy I’m accepting around me!”

As the hashtag #MissNigeria began trending on Twitter following the announcement, Douglas took to Instagram with a live video in which she described Singh as “amazing” and a big supporter of her fellow contestants.

“A lot of times in this kind of competition, there's a lot of times I thought ... this is really too much for me,” Douglas said.

“She was the one that would be like, 'Listen, you've got this'.”

Singh's win means that for the first time black women hold five of the biggest beauty pageant titles in the world.

The Jamaican model joins an impressive roster of women who hold some of the world’s most prestigious pageant titles including Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe, Cheslie Kryst as Miss USA, Kaliegh Garris as Miss Teen USA, and Nia Franklin as Miss America.

Singh, who was born in St Thomas, graduated from Florida State University with degrees in psychology and women’s studies and plans to enter medical school in the future., according to the Miss World website.

Following her win, Singh commented on the criticisms that some think the competition is outdated, saying: “As somebody that has first-hand experience (of Miss World), the biggest part of the competition is Beauty With A Purpose, to get things done.

“I understand there’s criticism, and I’m willing to have a conversation with anyone who would like to.”

She added: “This platform is about more than beauty."
