Motoring: Money up front

More filling stations in certain London areas may soon insist on payment before serving petrol, if a trial taking place in Manchester proves successful. The scheme is being tried in troublesome areas by garages keen to stop the number of 'drive-offs', people leaving without paying. The Petrol Retailers' Association says the scheme would benefit motorists by enabling more garages to stay open all night. Many now close because of security fears.
