Land Rover ‘parachuted’ Skyfall star Daniel Craig in for the car’s official unveiling in Manhattan this evening to appear in a glitzy mini-movie shot in secret location across the city to showcase the new SUV. He is also accompanying it to a star-studded unveiling party tonight on the eve of the motor show.

In New York the old Range Rover Sport spoke for itself with booming sales, and the new model is expected to be just as popular in the fashion-obsessed city. For Land Rover it is the third model in the new Range Rover portfolio of vehicles. It takes on a design that’s a mix of the latest Range Rover and the smaller Evoque with details like the headlines taken direct from the firm’s flagship model, while the two-bar grille comes from the baby off-roader. The previous model was based on the same platform as the Discovery, while the new model uses the same lightweight aluminium platform as the Range Rover and saves 420kg in weight in the process. This, the firm claims, makes it the “fastest, most agile, most responsive Land Rover ever”

Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “The new Range Rover Sport is the ultimate luxury SUV… Alongside the all-new Range Rover, and the Range Rover Evoque, the new Range Rover Sport represents the third distinct product in Land Rover’s product revolution. Firmly establishing it as a powerhouse British brand, with exceptional design at its core.”

The new model will be available with four engines, including two supercharged petrol engines (5.0-litre 510PS V8 and the new 3.0-litre 340PS V6) but more interestingly for British buyers two diesel engines. These are a more frugal 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and a more powerful 292PS SDV6. In addition, a fuel-efficient diesel hybrid model will be available to order for delivery in 2014 as will a high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel version. The smallest diesel engines offers a 15 per cent reduction in C02 over the outgoing model with emissions of 194g/km, while across the range acceleration times for the 0-60mph dash start from sub-5.0 seconds.

Inside the interiors follows the luxurious lead of the Range Rover and a new third row of occasional 5 + 2 seating can be specified. These are powered and leave a flat floor when down, but provide the option of additional seats for children or adults on short journeys.

Prices have yet to be released but are expected to start from round £55,000. Let’s just hope no buyers do this to it.
