The Bangkok Motor Show opened to the public March 26, with organizers predicting a 20 percent increase in sales on last year's show.

Nissan's new small car, the March, stole most of the attention at the show's opening with an announcement from the carmaker that it intended to produce the car in Thailand. Deliveries are set to begin in early June, priced from 375,000 baht to 537,000 baht (€8625 - €12,351).

Ford has also used the show to stage the ASEAN debut of its small car, the Fiesta, describing the Thai-built compact as a car that drivers would love for its "kinetic styling, driving dynamics, fuel efficiency and advanced technology." Ford says that its Bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity, and voice control system are unique to the Fiesta among its segment.

Mazda, which has increased its floorspace at the show by an additional 300 square meters, has launched a follow-up to its successful Mazda2 hatchback. The Mazda2 sports sedan aims to capitalize on the success of the hatchback version, which became the best-selling five-door hatchback in the Thai market within three months of its launch. The new Sports Sedan, starting at 535,000 baht (€12,305), features a 1.5 liter engine and a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating.

The Bangkok International Motor Show runs through April 6 at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre.
