Picture of the day: Canaletto's Greenwich Hospital from the north bank of the Thames, probably painted to mark the completion of the Hospital buildings in 1751. It is part of a new exhibition celebrating the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich (still a welfare foundation for seamen and their families) in the Queen's House at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Among exhibits in this show are Turner's largest work, The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough, and fine marine paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries (081-858 4422) to Nov.
