Premiere of 'dirt-sensitive' washing machine technology

German appliance manufacturer Miele held the world premiere of the 'AutoDos dosing system' at this year's IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

The AutoDos dosing system enables washing machines to apply the right amount of liquid or powder detergent depending upon the type of material being washed and how dirty the clothes are. Miele washing machines will be the first appliance in the world to use such technology, which, according to Miele's managing partner Dr. Reinhard Zinkann, could reduce detergent use by up to 30 percent.

A reduction in detergent use would benefit both the consumer, who can save on buying detergent, and the environment, due to a reduction in the use of harmful washing powders.  

Smart and environmentally friendly technology is a theme of this year's IFA; Siemens also unveiled at IFA a new line of washing machines which use i-dos technology - this technology enables more efficient cleaning on faster cycles reducing electrical consumption and minimizing energy wastage.

Speaking at IFA 2010, Dr. Zinkann outlined Miele's plans for continuing to develop products which are environmentally forward-thinking and work in harmony with the proposed smart grid. Miele has recently launched into a joint venture with RWE Effizienz GmbH to develop a range of intelligent, interconnected appliances which would work in harmony with the smart grid to reduce consumer costs and lower household electricity consumption.
