IN LONDON...

Onion,1 Sicilian Avenue, WC1 (0171-405 8605). Daily specials including Monday's sought-after combination of poached salmon with white cabbage marinated in fresh dill, garlic, and lemon on white rye bread.

Clocks, 89a Clarence St, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey (0181-974 5050). Named after its decor of unusual clocks with a lunch-hour favourite of chicken, bacon, mushroom, and spring onion on granary bread.

Pret-a-Manger, 34 outlets in and around London (0171-827 6300). November's "Gourmet Sandwich of the Month" is tomato, mozzarella cheese, avocado, and toasted pine nuts on Mediterranean bread.

Porky's Pantry, 49 Chandos Place (0171-836 0967). If the endless permutations give rise to savoury paralysis, head for simplicity in the bubble-and- squeak, and fried egg combination on your choice of bread.

Guinea, 30 Bruton Place, Mayfair (0171-409 1728). The award-winning Steak Mirabeau available here (and at the Windmill just around the corner) contains three and a half ounces of Aberdeen Angus steak, mayonnaise, tarragon, anchovy, tomato, olive paste, and lettuce served on toasted ciabatta (or a stretcher).

Mangetout, 55 Castle St, Liverpool, L2 9XL (0151-427 9857). Plenty of designer detail in the decor (complete with murals) and the sandwiches made with bread from the Lake District's Village Bakery. Try sun-dried tomato bread filled with cottage cheese, watercress, grated carrot, and walnut.

Harvey's Sandwich Bar, 89 Gloucester Green and 19/58 High St, Oxford (01865-793963). Roast turkey, bacon, and three melted cheeses on a toasted spinach, sun dried tomato or plain ciabatta.

Joshua's, 28 Martineau Square, Corporation St, City Centre, Birmingham B2 4UU (0121-233 9970). No questioning the management favourite here: baguette filled with peanut butter, ham, and banana.

Philpotts, 71 Mosley St, Manchester (0161-236 3112 or 01244-683818 for info on other stores). Snapple Sensational Sandwich award-winners. One of the recurring specials is rare roast beef with French fried onions and a Roquefort sauce.

Chatwins, 35 Nantwich Rd, Crewe, Cheshire CW2 6AF (01270-212481). Hangover treatment in the form of granary bread filled with black pudding, tomato, and mustard mayo.
