When it comes to overseas houseguests there are two sorts of host: the one who acts as accomplished tour guide to his foreign friends and the kind that meets them in the pub afterwards.

Balls Brother's is bang opposite the south side of St Pauls and if you balk at spending pounds 3 to enter a place of worship you could spend the money on a nice glass of Sauvignon (pounds 2.05) or a cheese and pickle sandwich (pounds 3.30) instead. A jug of Pimms is pounds 12 and the ice supply is seemingly inexhaustible.

Numerous outside tables leave the interior pleasantly empty on warm evenings with ceiling fans stirring the boozy atmosphere. And, once inside you no longer have to look at the ugly concrete block that houses it.

The ladies loo (there is only the one) is extremely basic so this branch is perhaps not the best choice for a hen party.
