Women at war : LETTER

Your correspondent Barbara Robinson asks why Anthony Powell should refer to Dorothy Hodgkin as a hag and a biologist (Letters, 4 February). The answer is quite simple. Mr Powell, like the majority of men, detests women, particularly uppity women who have distinguished careers and win Nobel prizes.

When Germaine Greer remarked, in The Female Eunuch, that women have no idea how much men hate them, she uttered a profound but unacknowledged truth.
