THE RATES being offered by Cheltenham & Gloucester and National Counties building societies look particularly attractive in comparison with their competitors', but both will be reviewed at the end of the year. Gross rates on other building society accounts are mostly in the range of 9.1 to 9.8 per cent, but may come down in early 1993.

Other noteworthy building society accounts at the moment include Skipton Building Society's 9.25 per cent gross return on its postal account (minimum investment pounds 20,000).

Other attractive Tessas include the 9.49 per cent return being offered by Cheshire Building Society. The minimum investment is pounds 1, and the transfer penalty is pounds 25.

On guaranteed income bonds, Hill Samuel is offering a 6.5 per cent annual return on its pounds 5,000-minimum, five-year bond.

On three-year bonds, Liberty Life is offering an annual 6.4 per cent return on investments of pounds 50,000 or more. Prosperity is offering 5.9 per cent on its one-year bond on pounds 25,000 or more.
