Bargain Hunter: Find a football deal that suits you - without paying the penalty
The start of the 2014-15 Premier League season has prompted a range of new TV deals this week.
NOW TV is has launched a new weekly pass which is priced at £10.99. It offers all seven Sky Sports channels for seven days, and the price looks a bargain compared to the day pass, which has been cut to £6.99. Both deals last until 27 November.
"The weekly sports TV pass is great value and removes the need for viewers to sign up to a contract before then adding on a Sports Channel boost," says Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at BroadbandChoices. "Football fans could even look to stretch access out over two weekends – Sunday to Saturday – if fixtures allow."
However if you're planning to watch a lot of football on telly this season, the deal makes little sense.
"Pay–as-you-go services are a little like cabs – using them every now and then can be cost effective but if you are using them every week, you should probably just buy the car outright," says Mr Baliszewski.
Those who plan season-long viewing could be tempted by Virgin Media's Season Ticket deal. It gives new and existing customers gives 10 months access to five Sky Sports channels for a one-off upfront fee of £150. The deal is available until the close of the transfer window at the end of August.
Talk Talk this week launched a Sky Sports Boost package, which offers six Sky Sports channels. It is half price at £15 a month for three months.
"The offer's tempting, especially when you consider that Talk Talk's current basic TV price is already good value at less than £5 per month," said Mr Baliszewski.
However, he warned that customers must ask themselves if they will use the sports TV channels or the rest of the premium TV service enough to justify switching.
