The Rugby World Cup starts next weekend and fans will be coming to England and Wales from all over the world. That could give you the chance to make some extra money by putting them up, so why not try the Government's Rent a Room scheme, which allows you to earn up to £4,250 tax-free?

"The scheme offers a tax break for those who let out furnished accommodation in their own homes, helping to generate extra income without additional tax," points out Jane Moore of the ICAEW accountancy organisation. "Sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup offer a fantastic opportunity to make use of the relief."

Even if you rent for a few days to someone who's attending a match, you'll be eligible. World Cup matches are being held in Birmingham, Brighton, Cardiff, Exeter, Gloucester, Leeds, Leicester, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle and Rugby.

The scheme is set to get more generous in 2016. While the current cap is £4,250, it will rise to £7,500 next year. You can find out more at the official website: gov.uk/rent-room-in-your-home/the-rent-a-room-scheme.
