The Bargain Hunter

By John Matthew Hall

With the cost of living rising faster than a stockbroker's blood pressure, we're all learning to cope with a frugal reality. On the other hand, this is forcing retailers to bust prices all over the shop – meaning there are plenty of bargains to be found, provided you know where to look.

* Take M&M Direct – an online fashion store selling sports and leisure wear with an astonishing 75 per cent discounted from the recommended retail price. By buying up end-of-line garments and shunning high-street outlets in favour of purpose-built warehouses, M&M Direct have slashed their overheads in order to bring you cheaper goods.

* Yes, it may sound similar to the mail-order business but while catalogues generally keep costs low by selling produce of poorer quality, M&M Direct stick resolutely to the named brands, with MissSixty, Diesel, Adidas and Oasis filling their consumer-friendly shelves.

* Another great place to pick up bargains this week is Waitrose, which is offering 25 per cent off selected wine and champagne. Forgive the premature festivity, but with Christmas less than two months away you'd do well to stock up early, and get a fantastic deal to boot. This offer ends on Wednesday, so you have only five days left to bag some bargain booze.

* Never one to miss a freebie, I've noticed that Yo Sushi has extended its Buy Five Plates, Get Another Five Free deal until further notice. Simply visit yosushi.com/promos, print off the appropriate voucher and take it to your nearest participating restaurant. Bear in mind, however, that the voucher is not valid on Fridays and Saturdays and is limited to a maximum of two people per visit. Enjoy.

The above offer was quoted in your column of 31st January. When I quoted the voucher number to Ocado it was not accepted. I telephoned to ask why and was told that Ocado were unaware of the article and the offer. They said the voucher must belong to an individual who had posted the number on the website. Please don't raise my hopes of a bargain only to have them dashed.
