Scams growing as tax deadline looms
A record 83,000 scam emails offering fake tax refunds were reported to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in September. What’s more, use of the technique, known as phishing, seems to be growing in the run-up to the 31 October deadline for paper self-assessment tax returns, with an unprecedented 10,000 reports of the fraud made to HMRC on one day alone.

HM Revenue & Customs has been accused of introducing a sneaky and unnecessary interest rate hike on late payment of taxes. Accountants UHY Hacker Young pointed out that HMRC is hiking the rate of interest payable on late taxes to 3 per cent on the majority of taxes from 29 September. It currently stands at 2.5 per cent.

Sub clause of the budget document contains an interesting little titbit. In future, wealthy tax evaders face being named and shamed on the HM Revenue & Customs website. I wonder how many celebrities and captains of industry will fall foul of this, also what about the chance of making a mistake and defaming someone – very shaky legal territory.
