THE French crew of an open rowing boat attempting to recreate a Viking voyage were rescued by accident after their call to the Scottish coastguard was misinterpreted.

The six-man crew, who left Bergen in Norway on Saturday night, do not speak English and simply wanted a boat to guide them into Fraserburgh port. But their call was misunderstood and Aberdeen coastguard scrambled two lifeboats and a helicopter.
