A group of organic gardeners was celebrating last night after seeing off plans by the Duchy of Cornwall to evict them from their allotments to make way for a low-cost housing development.

The Duchy, belonging to the Prince of Wales, had agreed to oust some of the allotment holders from plots in a West Country village to free up space for the new housing scheme. But the development was rejected by local planners yesterday.
