Banana gay sex trial opens

Zimbabwe's former state president Canaan Banana goes on trial today on 11 charges of sodomy, attempted sodomy and indecent assault involving mostly his former bodyguards.

Mr Banana was indicted in July following a police investigation after one of his former aides claimed he had been forced into a homosexual relationship by Mr Banana. The aide, Jefta Dube was sentenced to 10 years in jail in February for the 1995 fatal shooting of a fellow policeman who called him "Banana's wife".
